Blindspotting (2018 Movie) Official Trailer - Daveed Diggs, Rafael Casal
First time filmmaker Carlos Lopez Estrada has created a near perfect buddy comedy that somehow also manages to capture the complex topic of the Black Lives Matter vs Blue Lives Matter movements. Daveed Diggs and Raphael Casal shine in the two leading roles and the nine years the two spent working on the screenplay can be seen through every word of dialogue they speak.
"Manages to create what is possibly one of the most powerful monologues in recent memory"
The opening credits of Blindspotting shows different parts of Oakland, California in split screen. There's old street corners and shops and there's newly constructed gentrified housing. And while both images are being shown to us we find our focus constantly shifting between the two but "never being able to see both", as a character from the film notes.
"Takes an authentic voice to the theaters through dominant performances and creative dialogue"
I was moved by Diggs’s acting and felt the connection between him and Casal. The poetry and dialogue are my favorite aspects of the film. Their rhythm and adlibbed rapes helped me emphasize with their characters. The stunning visuals combined with their performances drove home the message that the director intended, and has stuck with me.
"My favorite theater experience so far this year"
A. My favorite theater experience so far this year. Yes it tackles a lot and there are some marks of a directorial debut, but here are the things worth the $ of a ticket alone: the script (it’s a VERY funny movie),the soundtrack, and the performances of the 2 leads. I’m reminded of Tarintino’s “Reservoir Dogs” in that if director Carlos Estrada and writer Daveed Diggs can attempt another movie with more experience under their belt, we’re in for something very special. This is a must see for cinephiles and casual fans alike.
"It's hard to put into words the impact this movie had on me"
I love the feeling you get when you walk out of a theater knowing that what you just saw will be one of your favorite movies of the year... I had that feeling the night I saw Blindspotting.
"I tried to think of several Hamilton jokes for this review but my brain wasn't working"
This film tackles issues like police brutality and gentrification in a way that doesn't seem forced or preachy at all; the way they address these topics is amazing.
"Great performances & solid characters"
+Multiple stand out scenes, great performances, and solid characters with understandable motivations
-Director was too timid to fully commit to his own style, two student filmy scenes
